Canistera depicts a futuristic scenario in which humans utilize music and the medium of sound solely for therapeutic purposes, and scientific experiments. The piece is portrays a “session” in the year 3000 AD, in which a group of busy business‐men and women gather in an auditorium in order to experience an emotionally nourishing soundscape being emitted from a “sound canister”. Only music designed to propagate the most desirable human emotions is emitted from the canister, in order to grant its audience the ultimate utopian experience. An experience void of sadness, logistics, and public transport. However, during this particular “session”, the canister malfunctions and the auditorium is controversially filled to the brim with silence. A mechanic bursts into the auditorium and frantically attempts to repair the canister. The startled audience members are left in a state of stillness that rarely occurs in their everyday lives, and are surprised to find themselves beginning to ponder. They reflect on the state of their family members, and mull over their weekly time‐table. Some even begin to stumble over thoughts that are resourceful and inventive. But just before the audience members begin to regain their earthly consciousness and mentally confront issues of great importance, the mechanic breaths a sigh of relief, and the utopian soundscape floods the auditorium once again. The audience members return to their mediative state of utopian bliss. Free from undesirable thoughts. Free from thought. And free from all that is real.
